KEEPING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE:
WHAT DO WE NEED FROM OUR POLICE FORCE?
The shooting in Reservoir Hill last weekend saddens everyone in our community, both because of the loss of a life, and because the ongoing violence in our communities is unacceptable. Recent media reports have focused on a potential slowdown in policing following the events surrounding the death of Freddie Gray, as well as on an increase in violent crime throughout the city. Whether the recent shooting is related or not, we need more from our police now, not less, but we need different policing not just more policing. We need policing that meets community needs. We need more action that is systemic and comprehensive to really address the drug situation permanently. RHIC will be advocating for proposals that do both.
This discussion will focus on ideas to systemically change policing, and demand maximum police attention to our communities, both in Central and Western districts. Whether a community is in Central or Western district, we share the problem, sometimes as spill over. Soon, students will be moving between John Eager Howard Elementary School and Westside Elementary School, as the 21st century schools initiative progresses. A joint strategy that covers Western and Central Districts is needed. This discussion is one step in that strategy.
Please come and be part of the conversation. We need everyone’s voices if we are to significantly improve how policing is implemented in our communities. New Lens and No Boundaries Coalition will join us in leading the panel discussion.
WORK IS UNDERWAY ON CALLOW
Healthy Neighborhoods and Druid Heights CDC personnel will brief the community on the status of the Callow Avenue houses being renovated, including floor plans, exterior plans, price, schedule, and other considerations such as the possibility of solar.
