Friends & Neighbors, the Baltimore Education Coalition Legislative Preview coming up on 29 January at 5:30 pm at Waverly Elementary & Middle School is one of the most important gatherings for school advocates in preparing to protect Baltimore City's education funding from state cuts. Please join us. We need you.
RHIC strongly believes that school redevelopment is a critical component of neighborhood revitalization. A stellar education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. A stellar school draws more people to move to or remain in our community. Plus, a new school facility has the possibility of providing even more resources to an even larger part of our community population.
To that end we’ve committed significant resources these past five years to furthering a range of school improvement efforts, and, as an active member of Transform Baltimore and Baltimore Education Coalition, to the city-wide campaign to modernize all city schools. Our neighborhood elementary school, John Eager Howard, is in Year One of the school construction plan, and the neighbors and supporters organized in the JEH Design Advisory & Action Team have built an incredible outreach effort to ensure maximum community involvement in the design of the new school facility.
This is one of the most exciting and far reaching initiatives in Baltimore today. But we have a long way to go in the redevelopment of the initial schools, and an even longer way to go in securing the resources to modernize all city schools. The possibility of state budget cuts this year that negatively impact the basic funding needed to maintain our schools and to complete the school modernization effort is very high. Parents, school employees, and community members need to be well informed and well organized during this year’s General Assembly to protect education funding.
We hope you will be able to attend our session on 29 January to get the most up-to-date information and help us emerge from the gathering ready to protect education funding.
