Young volunteers shovel wood chips at the South Lots community space (11/18/12)
As we enter into late fall, it takes a bit of imagination to see the future trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers that will cover the South Lots on Whitelock St. at some warm moment in the future. But mostly, it takes a lot of helping hands to shovel wood chips, build berms, and get as many plants as possible into the ground before the ground freezes!
Thanks to all the community residents who have helped over the last couple of weeks, and a special thank you to the boys of St. Ignatius Loyal Academy for volunteering their Saturdays this fall to help us along the way!
Here's how you plant along a berm built out of recycled soil and debris:
First step: dig a hole for your plant
Second step: Carefully place your plant in the soil
Third step: Fill up your wheel barrow with wood chips
Fourth step: Spread wood chips around your plant to keep the soil moist
Fifth step: Gather some friends to help you water the plants
Sixth step: Taste some of the rose hip berries you just helped to plant
Seventh step: Add some more water
Eighth step: Start preparing the next berm!
