Trees beautify Reservoir Hill’s roadways and work to filter the toxins out of the air and soil. Baltimore City has a goal to double canopy in the city and RHIC is working to make it happen in Reservoir Hill. RHIC organizes residents around planting trees on vacant lots, private properties, and public land. RHIC will even break the ground to do it!

Creating greenways, or beautified and well-maintained paths that connect blocks, institutions, and parks can help foster relationships and improve public safety. RHIC and block clubs have installed over 50 planter pots with evergreen shrubs and annual flowers on Chauncey Avenue, Brooks Lane, Linden Avenue, and Brookfield Avenue. To further enhance the pathways in this area, RHIC helped to restore 20 front lawns in this area with funding from the Baltimore Community Foundation.

RHIC and residents turned the vacant lot located on 728-732 Lennox Street into a community vegetable garden. The project included testing and cultivating the soil, building the fence and beds, and running a water line to the meter. Residents of Bolton-Park Neighbors manage the garden and the 40+ gardeners who grow food here maintain the space. Teens from Kids on the Hill created mosaic stepping stones for the pathways and learn about food production from community gardeners.

Large vacant lots that are not maintained become unsightly and dangerous as they are littered with trash, glass, and construction debris and overgrown with weeds. RHIC has worked with residents to restore large vacant lots into simple but beautiful parks
